Unalienable Rights?

In the thread about Gabby Gifford, another Right Wing Nut Job wrote-

“I will not have my unalienable Constitutional rights taken away because a brain-damaged hysterical woman demands it.”

The poster is confusing documents, and rights. The only mention of ‘unalienable rights’ is in the Declaration of Independents. The only unalienable rights that are enumerated are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Nowhere in the constitution, or in the ‘Bill of Rights’, are any of the rights mentioned qualified as being ‘unalienable’.

Our creator endowing us with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is nice poetry but people are deprived of life and liberty on a regular basis. Often by the government. The rights listed in the constitution are never referred to as being ‘god given’ or ‘unalienable’.

The constitution is a contract by we, the people, on how we will govern ourselves. The only guarantee we have of the rights listed in the constitution is our willingness to defend them. That is the main reason I support the ACLU.
